{"id":112751,"date":"2026-01-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=112751"},"modified":"2025-12-19T22:00:50","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T11:00:50","slug":"aircrew-officer-mick-kerry-marks-40-years-with-rescue-helicopter-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/aircrew-officer-mick-kerry-marks-40-years-with-rescue-helicopter-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Aircrew officer Mick Kerry marks 40 years with rescue helicopter service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WESTPAC Rescue Helicopter Service has marked the 40-year anniversary of Lismore-based aircrew officer Mick Kerry.<\/p>\n<p>Kerry joined the service as a fresh-faced 18-year-old in 1985 and has since been involved in hundreds of critical call outs and lifesaving rescues across the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was a volunteer for the first seven years, and it was fairly humble beginnings when you look at the state-of-the-art equipment we operate with now,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The service kicked off in 1982, and I was lucky that I was on surf lifesaving patrol at Ballina when they were looking for new recruits three years later.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Time flies, but it&#8217;s something I love, and I&#8217;ve had a lot of support from family and the people I&#8217;ve worked with over the years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kerry served as head of aircrew training and checking in the northern region between 1995 and 2017.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120908\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-120908\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/129241758_1015793134_25824.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"395\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mick during an education session with kids in his early days with the service. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He also held the role of crew chief officer for six years and has been involved in major flood and bushfire responses, as well as dangerous sea rescues.<\/p>\n<p>One of his most personal missions involved transporting his brother Steve to a Gold Coast hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was already here in hospital and was meant to be having surgery the next day,&#8221; Kerry said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the nurses found him with a bleed on the brain and I didn&#8217;t know until we got the call out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was one where it was very lucky that we had such a positive outcome of getting him where he needed to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The summer period remains one of the busiest times for the service.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120909\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120909\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-120909\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/129958295_1015793134_28078.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fundraising and community involvement has helped keep the helicopter service running for more than 40 years. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s horses and motorbike accidents on the weekends these days, we seem to get them more than anything else,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The school holiday and summer period is really busy, and you just never know what you&#8217;re going to get.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The helicopter service relies on a large team including crew, paramedics, doctors, engineers, administration staff and fundraisers.<\/p>\n<p>Kerry said he was grateful to be part of a team committed to the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone who works there just wants to do their bit for the service,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just about everyone you speak to in the area has a story about someone they know who has needed the helicopter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It definitely has that community connection and I&#8217;ve always been proud to be involved.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WESTPAC Rescue Helicopter Service has marked the 40-year anniversary of Lismore-based aircrew officer Mick Kerry.
