{"id":112783,"date":"2026-01-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=112783"},"modified":"2026-01-07T22:51:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T11:51:32","slug":"safety-for-all-with-e-bikes-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/safety-for-all-with-e-bikes-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety for all with e-bikes this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWEED Shire Council is backing a police crackdown on unsafe e-bike and e-scooter use, urging riders and parents to follow the rules after a series of serious incidents on local paths and roads.<\/p>\n<p>The warning follows a recent enforcement blitz in the latter half of the year, which resulted in significant confiscations and fines, including the arrest and fining of five young people in Tweed and the destruction of modified bikes.<\/p>\n<p>The holiday season typically brings an increase in visitors, foot traffic and new e-bikes and e-scooters on shared paths across the Tweed.<\/p>\n<p>In June last year, a local father, football coach and carpenter was seriously injured after being struck by an e-bike in Casuarina.<\/p>\n<p>A man also died in an e-bike crash in Ewingsdale in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Tweed Shire mayor Chris Cherry said the safety of both pedestrians and riders had become a critical issue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120990\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-120990\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/16-dec-tng-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"E-bike safety rules\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tweed Shire Council is urging e-bike and e-scooter users to stay safe and follow the rules. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There has been some really atrocious behaviour from e-bike and e-scooter riders lately,&#8221; Cr Cherry said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to remember that there are a lot of good riders out there who are doing the right thing and using the e-bikes for the great alternative transport that they are.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am hoping that the latest blitzes send a really strong message to parents to educate their children properly on safety. The destruction of the bikes will hit parents in the hip pocket, and that is usually the best way to get people to sit up and take notice, so I am very hopeful that we will see a real behaviour change out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In NSW, e-bikes must meet strict power and speed limits to be legally used.<\/p>\n<p>The council&#8217;s role in enforcement is limited, with police responsible for compliance on shared paths and roads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120992\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120992\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-120992\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/picture_20251126_170_89633.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"469\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Northern Rivers Rail Trail offers families a safe riding experience with a rich variety of scenic options and villages to explore. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Police are responsible for enforcement of e-bike use, and I am incredibly grateful to the local area command for the crackdown they have undertaken,&#8221; Cr Cherry said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know they have been issuing warnings before this, but this strong message of confiscation and charges for riders is what is needed now, so I think it is great they are doing it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But please don&#8217;t decide to stop taking your walks, it is so important to be out in the fresh air and being active.
