{"id":112827,"date":"2026-01-08T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=112827"},"modified":"2026-01-07T22:48:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T11:48:12","slug":"smokehouse-bbq-sundays-a-hit-for-local-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/smokehouse-bbq-sundays-a-hit-for-local-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Smokehouse BBQ Sundays a hit for local families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FROM what began with a childhood memory of cooking outdoors and later a love of authentic barbecue techniques from Tyalgum to Texas, a local couple has created a family institution at the Murwillumbah Leagues Club every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Twenty20 Smokehouse BBQ was established in 2021 by former carpenter Karl Will Magnusson, known to the community as Will, and wife Christina.<\/p>\n<p>Offering a lovingly slow-cooked spread of smoked barbecue with traditional sides, the weekend events are family friendly with live music and kids&#8217; activities, including a jumping castle, and fields to play in a safe, easily watched area by parents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a key thing from the very start to make it ultra-family friendly because to me, barbecue is a family thing, just enjoying the food and taking the time,&#8221; Magnusson said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121010\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121010\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/bbq2a_96121.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#8217;s no mucking around with portion size at Twenty 20 Smokehouse BBQ. PHOTO: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is slow food and takes hours to cook so it should take hours to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I started and my kids were little, we were always looking for a place where we could sit down and enjoy our food and a drink while the kids are entertained too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re 11 and 13 now, but it&#8217;s always been in our mind because we remember that time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It makes everything a lot more relaxed and people stay longer and enjoy their meals and the music, rather than rushing because the kids want to go because there&#8217;s nothing for them to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121011\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121011\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/bbq4_96100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Slow-cooked, locally sourced meat and produce with traditional sides and condiments are designed for a long and leisurely family lunch. PHOTO: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of Tongan heritage, Magnusson grew up on the outskirts of Tyalgum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a banana shed, no electricity, and minimal running water, so we did a lot of outdoor cooking as I was growing up and it was a thing that I was used to,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But when I got older and moved to town, I didn&#8217;t really think about that style of cooking and the way I grew up until I went to America backpacking with Christina in my early 20s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We spent over four months in Central and South America and I saw American barbecue, and Argentinean barbecue, Brazilian barbecue, and it really ignited my love of cooking with fire, that primal thing, and that&#8217;s how it all started.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121012\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121012\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121012\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/bbq2_96156.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The family-friendly neighbourhood barbecue vibes are a hit with the Leagues Club community and surrounding residents. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the years since, Magnusson has returned to the US five times touring restaurants and food outlets to get a deeper first-hand knowledge of the cuisine. The sophistication, technique and diversity can sometimes be lost on the layperson, but for the aficionado, the subtleties are everything.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I realised how nuanced it was and how perfectionist it can be to get to the very, very high quality and standards that they have in America, particularly in Texas,&#8221; Magnusson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That gave me a good grounding to come back and try and reach those heights, and even if I don&#8217;t reach that level, I&#8217;m hoping to be one of the better ones in Australia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121013\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121013\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/bbq3_96147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A feast for all the senses at Twenty20 Smokehouse BBQ.
