VOLUNTEERS at the Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue are running education tours in the school holidays to highlight ongoing rescue and rehabilitate efforts across the region.<\/p>\n

The group mainly runs out of Ballina and will hold a range of interactive sessions during the next fortnight.<\/p>\n

People can visit the the sea turtle hospital where a guide will explain about the problems sea turtles face and go through what they do with a turtle when it first comes into care.<\/p>\n

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to learn about the hazards marine life face and a real-life insight into seabird and turtle rescue and how we can all be more mindful and proactive in their protection,” a turtle recue spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“We recognise our role in community education by inspiring and engaging with the public to minimise the impact the humans have on wildlife.<\/p>\n

“Volunteers are the backbone of this organisation, and we thank them for their ongoing commitment.”<\/p>\n

The group are often assisted by the community when they have turtle release days at Lighthouse Beach and other parts of the region.<\/p>\n

They have a rescue truck, purpose-built hospital and rehabilitation aviaries allow volunteers to rescue and rehabilitate injured seabirds, sea turtles and sea snakes.<\/p>\n

The holiday tour is a 50-minute onsite lesson held at the education centre and is suitable for all ages.<\/p>\n

People are also encouraged to ask questions and pursue volunteer opportunities after the session.<\/p>\n

The role involves looking after shorebirds such as pelicans, cormorants and oyster catchers and sea birds, including shearwaters, terns and seagulls.<\/p>\n

Members undertake regular patrols to look for injured birds that congregate around Ballina’s waterways.<\/p>\n
