{"id":112917,"date":"2026-01-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=112917"},"modified":"2026-01-07T23:11:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T12:11:50","slug":"taylor-tops-the-field-at-prestigious-summerland-series-lawn-bowls-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/taylor-tops-the-field-at-prestigious-summerland-series-lawn-bowls-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Taylor tops the field at prestigious Summerland Series lawn bowls event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ALSTONVILLE bowler Peter Taylor has claimed the $12,500 Summerland Singles title for the second time, winning the prestigious event at Cherry Street Sports Club.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament, which has been running for more than 50 years, is regarded as one of the premier summer events on the Bowls Australia calendar and attracts top state and national representatives each year.<\/p>\n<p>It capped off a big week for Taylor, who also reached the final of the pairs tournament alongside Tim Twining.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor was dominant in the singles final, defeating Queensland state representative Kane Nelson 21-7.<\/p>\n<p>His path to the title included a semi-final victory over Australian representative Corey Wedlock.<\/p>\n<p>Wedlock won the pairs and singles at the event last year and was also the 2023 singles champion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/611181827_7242037974_47211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The singles field was made up of 84 of the best lawn bowlers from around the country. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to this event every year and it\u2019s always a massive one,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got the result in the end, but Kane is a competitor and he\u2019s going to go a long way in this game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor won the event for the first time in 2020, when he defeated former Ballina bowler and Australian Jackaroos representative Aaron Teys.<\/p>\n<p>He is one of only a handful of local bowlers to win the event twice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/605743387_7242003440_50823.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"358\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australian and state representatives played in the pairs and singles events this year. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Former Ballina bowler Indi Conlan won this year\u2019s pairs title with Burleigh Heads teammate Scott De Jongh.<\/p>\n<p>Conlan is the current Queensland singles champion, while De Jongh has been a regular competitor at the tournament for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina Bowling Club men\u2019s president Geoff Wegg praised Taylor for its efforts in the finals of the singles competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a wonderful carnival, and we had a great exhibition in the final,\u201d Wegg said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe played 119 games over three days, and each one was assisted by volunteers from around the region.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALSTONVILLE bowler Peter Taylor has claimed the $12,500 Summerland Singles title for the second time, winning the prestigious event at Cherry Street Sports Club.
