{"id":112945,"date":"2026-01-16T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=112945"},"modified":"2026-01-14T18:00:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T07:00:24","slug":"bundjalung-creation-story-anchorsnew-tweed-regional-museum-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/bundjalung-creation-story-anchorsnew-tweed-regional-museum-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Bundjalung creation story anchorsnew Tweed Regional Museum exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW exhibition sharing one of the most foundational creation stories of the Bundjalung Nation opened when Tweed Regional Museum itself reopened to the public in Murwillumbah last week.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition, titled The Wiiyaan, opened on January 9 and presents the Bundjalung creation story of the Three Brothers through contemporary cultural expression and community-led storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>Artist and cultural adviser Kyle Slabb said the exhibition responds to an urgent moment for cultural transmission.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the considerations that we have to think about now and the time that we&#8217;re in, is what we pass on to the next generation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re the last generation of contact with traditional people in our community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our kids&#8217; generation never knew our grandmothers and grandfathers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121229\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121229\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/TweedRegionalMuseum-_03011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bundjalung Artists and Cultural Advisors Kyle and Bijang Slabb. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During that transition, what doesn&#8217;t get passed on, you can lose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This project is part of that exercise for me \u2013 making sure every Bundjalung kid knows our origin story, understands our lore, and knows what connects us back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Slabb said the exhibition presents selected layers of the story, with deeper cultural knowledge intentionally held within community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re only telling a surface layer in the exhibition, but there are lots of layers of knowledge embedded in the story,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition explores the origins of Bundjalung tribal groups and dialects across the Northern Rivers.<\/p>\n<p>The Wiiyaan refers to the unbroken line of ancestors of the Tweed Bundjalung people.<\/p>\n<p>The creation story tells of three brothers who arrived by canoe with their families and travelled north, south and west, forming distinct tribal groups and language variations across Country.<\/p>\n<p>In the southern dialect, the brothers are known as Mamoon, Birrung and YarBirrain, while in the northern dialect they are Yarbiri, Marming and Birin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121230\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121230\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/TweedRegionalMuseum-_03036.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bundjalung Artists and Cultural Advisors Bijang and Kyle Slabb walking through the new exhibition. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story remains embedded in Bundjalung culture, lore and Country, with key locations connected to natural landmarks throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>Tweed Regional Museum acting director Erika Taylor said the exhibition reflects a commitment to community-led storytelling and cultural authority.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a regional museum, storytelling is what we do, and using contemporary technology to tell an ancient cultural story is a really exciting space for us,&#8221; Taylor said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Wiiyaan is a powerful example of what museums can be when they are guided by cultural knowledge holders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What makes The Wiiyaan so moving is its purpose; it shares a foundational Bundjalung creation story in a way that honours community authority and invites people of all ages to understand the deep cultural connections to Country that surround them every day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121231\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121231\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/TweedRegionalMuseum-_03033.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new exhibition, The Wiiyaan, tells the three brothers creation story that explains the origins of the Bundjalung Nation&#8217;s different tribes and their dialects. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This exhibition is about ensuring cultural knowledge is not lost but carried forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is an act of care for future generations, and it has been a privilege for the museum to support Bundjalung artists and knowledge holders in bringing this story to life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition&#8217;s works were developed with creative and technical support from Brisbane-based Ludo Studio, which assisted with digital and visual elements under the direction of Bundjalung artists and community members.<\/p>\n<p>The project was shaped by elders and knowledge holders to ensure traditional knowledge continues to be passed on to younger generations.<\/p>\n<p>The Wiiyaan runs from January 9 until July 18 at Tweed Regional Museum in Murwillumbah.<\/p>\n<p>Entry to the exhibition is free.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW exhibition sharing one of the most foundational creation stories of the Bundjalung Nation opened when Tweed Regional Museum itself reopened to the public in Murwillumbah last week.
