{"id":113031,"date":"2026-01-16T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=113031"},"modified":"2026-01-16T10:54:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T23:54:38","slug":"nimbin-to-host-battle-of-the-codes-in-gaelic-football-exhibition-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/nimbin-to-host-battle-of-the-codes-in-gaelic-football-exhibition-match\/","title":{"rendered":"Nimbin to host battle of the codes in Gaelic football exhibition match"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NIMBIN will host the inaugural battle of the sporting codes when the Demons Aussie Rules team takes on the Headers soccer club in a Gaelic football exhibition match.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:360px;margin:0 auto;\">\n  <iframe loading=\"lazy\"\n    src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1203513415228965\/&#038;show_text=false\"\n    width=\"360\"\n    height=\"640\"\n    style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\"\n    scrolling=\"no\"\n    frameborder=\"0\"\n    allowfullscreen=\"true\"\n    allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><br \/>\n  <\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>Video: Doug Rothwell<\/p>\n<p>The contest will be played at Headers Sport Field on Saturday, February 7, showcasing a hybrid sport that blends elements of Australian Rules and soccer.<\/p>\n<p>Demons player Will Alexander came up with the concept as a pre-season fitness challenge following the club&#8217;s return to competition in 2025 after a 15-year hiatus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an unprecedented event and it all came about as something we could do in the pre-season for a bit of extra fitness,&#8221; Alexander said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was speaking to my father, and we thought how about we challenge the soccer guys to a game of Gaelic football.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parts of the game suit each team and there will be an element of surprise and not knowing what to expect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve won premierships and have a bit of a following; you combine that with our crowd and there is no reason why we can&#8217;t get a few hundred people there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121391\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121391\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121391\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/IMG_3640_67442.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121391\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jerone McMurray giving the Nimbin Demons and Headers a crash course in Gaelic football.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Both clubs have started training together under the guidance of Irish coach Jerone McMurray, who has experience with Gaelic football.<\/p>\n<p>Gaelic football has 15 players per side and blends elements from other sports including basketball.<\/p>\n<p>It is played on a rectangular pitch with H-shaped goals.<\/p>\n<p>Players advance a round ball by carrying, kicking, bouncing, and hand-passing it, aiming to score by kicking it over the crossbar or under into the net.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will be a friendly match, but I&#8217;m sure once we cross that white line it will be on,&#8221; Alexander said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of the big centre backs in the soccer team will be hard to handle and will enjoy the contact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All things going well we&#8217;ll extend an invite to clubs in Lismore and Casino next year and make it an afternoon and evening event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Proceeds from the match will go towards both clubs to help fundraise for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NIMBIN will host the inaugural battle of the sporting codes when the Demons Aussie Rules team takes on the Headers soccer club in a Gaelic football exhibition match.
