{"id":113140,"date":"2026-01-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=113140"},"modified":"2026-01-21T23:18:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T12:18:38","slug":"meg-washingtons-natural-beauty-explores-the-schism-between-art-and-capitalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/meg-washingtons-natural-beauty-explores-the-schism-between-art-and-capitalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Meg Washington&#8217;s Natural Beauty explores the schism between art and capitalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SINGER-songwriter Meg Washington is touring her award-nominated new album <em>GEM<\/em> on a 23-date run and stopping at Brunswick Heads in February.<\/p>\n<p>The four-time ARIA Award-winner and masterful storyteller said the new single <em>Natural Beauty<\/em> is at the heart of the album, and took her a long time to write.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only piano song on the album and is really a list of various complaints I have about being an artist inside a capitalistic world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never imagined I would use \u2018superannuation\u2019 as a lyric, but the songs always find a way to startle me, and the song was born from a real place of feeling that everything I care about is not really connected to money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a world where the religion is money, and while money is essential, it\u2019s not everything and I see so much in the world that that that gets forgotten because it doesn\u2019t have a material outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of those things is that music and art and singing actually belong to people, to everybody, but people think that unless you\u2019re shockingly, brilliantly, and outstandingly good at it, you shouldn\u2019t continue. What\u2019s that joke? Don\u2019t quit your day job. I hate that joke. It\u2019s demeaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121611\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121611\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/MegWashington-Natura_90217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"738\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Washington&#8217;s concerts are known for their intimacy and transfixing, other world quality. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mother Nature inspired the album itself, Washington said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about animal nature, human nature and my own nature and the album came at a time of reckoning for me, because I had just left the major label that I was signed to for 13 years, and I was questioning everything; like, why make records? What am I doing this for?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was searching for a while, and I eventually realised that, because I sing all day, and have ever since I was a kid, in the shower, going to the bus, in the supermarket and in the car, that if I was on a desert island and there was nobody around, I would still sing all day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat helped me to find a way into writing about why that\u2019s important, singing for no reason, and singing without capitalistic intent, and that\u2019s where the record was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid the friction between artistic and commercial imperatives, Washington is secure in the knowledge that she has always been an artist and will always be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can retire out of spite or rage or sadness, but it doesn\u2019t stop you from wanting to because all you have to do is pick up the guitar again and you\u2019re back where you began, with a song in your heart and a story to tell,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121612\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121612\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/MegWashingtonNatural_90221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"471\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new single Natural Beauty is a treatise on being an artist in a capitalistic world.
