WHEN a group of teenagers from Byron Bay High School decided to name their heavy metal band after the street where they used to jam in Ewingsdale, they could never have anticipated the long-term ramifications.<\/p>\n

Over the years, the Parkway Drive sign has been stolen so many times that Byron Shire Council eventually resorted to painting the name directly onto the road.<\/p>\n

“But that created a problem because people lie on the road to get a photo taken,” frontman Winston McCall said.<\/p>\n

From those humble beginnings in the basement of Ben Gordon’s family home in 2003, and their first gig at the Byron Youth Centre, Parkway Drive has gone on to achieve worldwide success. They have won three ARIA Awards, for Best Hard Rock\/Heavy Metal Album for Deep Blue in 2010, Reverence in 2018 and Darker Still in 2023.<\/p>\n

Now the band, which includes guitarists Jeff Ling and Luke Kilpatrick and bassist Jia O’Connor, is thrilled to perform in the area they grew up in for the first time in more than a decade when they take to the stage at Bluesfest on Thursday, April 2.<\/p>\n

McCall said being invited to play at Bluesfest by festival director Peter Noble, whose son also attended Byron Bay High School, was surreal.<\/p>\n

“It’s something we never really anticipated happening and we’re stoked to be given the chance to do it,” he said.<\/p>\n

“When you see the name ‘blues’ you don’t really think Parkway Drive, but we definitely represent the roots of Byron. It’s been really cool how Bluesfest has opened up to more and more acts and sounds over the years. It means a helluva a lot to us. We’re on the more extreme type of music periphery so we don’t get given those chances too often. We’re a big punt for Peter to be putting on in terms of the sound, which is really rad. We didn’t even get to play Splendour.”<\/p>\n

McCall said the last time Parkway Drive performed in the region was in 2015, when they played at Byron Bay High during their tour for Ire.<\/p>\n

“After that the band grew so large there were no venues we could play in in our town so we didn’t really have a chance,” he said.<\/p>\n

McCall describes Parkway Drive’s music as “a sharp sugar hit that might cut your mouth on the way through”.<\/p>\n

“Once you get through you find the blood sugar spikes on adrenaline and you find it very hard to forget,” he said.<\/p>\n

Appearing in the second season of Gordon’s friend Chris Hemsworth’s Disney+ documentary series Limitless provided the band with significant mainstream exposure, highlighting its cultural relevance beyond the heavy metal scene.<\/p>\n

“I remember Ben rocking up and going, ‘hey, so I’m teaching Chris to play the drums so we can go and play with Ed Sheeran,” McCall said.<\/p>\n

“The experience we had with him coming and playing with us was brutal because we had to be very honest with him in terms of his lack of ability.<\/p>\n

“It was really rad to see someone pick up that skill so quickly.<\/p>\n

“And it definitely hasn’t harmed us because we are bigger now than we ever have been.”<\/p>\n

The band is currently working on a new album and is also looking forward to the release of a movie later this year, featuring a live album recording filmed at the Sydney Opera House.<\/p>\n

The filming saw Sydney Harbour shut down, with McCall rappelling from a helicopter onto the sails of the Opera House.<\/p>\n

“The film is a combination of that live performance and other elements surrounding the band,” he said.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the 43-year-old said he is excited to introduce Parkway Drive to audiences who have never seen the band perform live at Bluesfest.<\/p>\n

“It’s one thing to have an idea what this kind of music is but it’s entirely different to come and experience one of these shows and connect with the energy there,” he said. “It’s really, really, really awesome.”<\/p>\n
