{"id":114208,"date":"2026-03-19T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=114208"},"modified":"2026-03-19T11:50:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T00:50:56","slug":"fiery-festival-set-to-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/fiery-festival-set-to-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiery festival set to return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TRAVELLING chilli and chocolate festival will return to Chinderah later this month, bringing food stalls, competitions and fundraising for Rural Aid.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinderah Chilli and Chocolate Festival will be held at Seagulls Club on March 22 from 12pm to 5pm, with organisers expecting hundreds of visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by former chilli farmer and entrepreneur Jase O&#8217;Connor, the event combines community fundraising with a celebration of chilli inspired food and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>For a two dollar entry fee, visitors can sample more than 300 chilli themed treats including sauces, spicy chocolates and a chilli chocolate milkshake.<\/p>\n<p>Food trucks from across Queensland will serve international dishes designed to complement the festival&#8217;s fiery theme.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Connor created the concept after floods devastated his hometown of Murphys Creek in south east Queensland in 2011.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123648\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123648\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/WinnerLloydCremer_25912_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Previous Chilli Dog Championship winner \u201cBig Dog.\u201d Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We started a festival in Murphys Creek because that was annihilated and it never really hit the press,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea was to just put chilli festival love in regions that had suffered a natural disaster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s Tweed event will raise funds for Rural Aid to support farmers affected by floods, drought and bushfires.<\/p>\n<p>The festival&#8217;s signature amateur chilli eating competitions are expected to draw strong crowds, particularly the Chilli Dog Championship for over 18s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the serious one,&#8221; O&#8217;Connor said.<\/p>\n<p>Contestants must remain standing as they attempt to eat hot dogs drenched in an intensely spicy sauce, with organisers keeping milk and yoghurt on standby.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These guys stand up and sweat and start dancing,&#8221; O&#8217;Connor said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123436\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123436\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/Jase-Provests_26722-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chinderah Chilli and Chocolate Festival founder Jase O\u2019Connor, Kirstin Provest, Geoff Provest MP. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their knees get wobbly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Winners are judged on their ability to remain on stage for two minutes after finishing without reaching for relief.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they purge or vomit or have to reach for that glass of milk they&#8217;re out,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Connor said the festival was about supporting charities, vendors and bringing people together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For us it&#8217;s about supporting charities, and the amazing vendors,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And we&#8217;re having a bunch of hot fun doing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tweed MP Geoff Provest said the event helped showcase small businesses while supporting community causes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a testament to the spirit of our community and the power of coming together for a flavourful cause,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A TRAVELLING chilli and chocolate festival will return to Chinderah later this month, bringing food stalls, competitions and fundraising for Rural Aid.
