NORTHERN Rivers band Acid Bleed have spent nearly two decades weaving Gypsy jazz and Latin grooves, and now they are bringing their bygone-era sound and community spirit to the Condong Bowling Club as part of the Tweed Valley Jazz and Blues experience.<\/p>\n

Long-time member Andrew Horowitz said the band’s jarring name often raises eyebrows.<\/p>\n

“We sometimes joke in front of audiences that we play punk rock,” Horowitz said.<\/p>\n

“The music is not punk rock at all, but the name Acid Bleed does sound harsh and heavy metal.”<\/p>\n

The origin of the name is rooted in both musical and metaphorical inspiration.<\/p>\n

Acid bleed is a type of corrosion that affects brass instruments, caused by deterioration of flux in the joints, something Horowitz noticed on his new soprano saxophone early in the band’s history.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the idea of corrosion spoke to the band members themselves, who were already mature adults when they formed the group.<\/p>\n

“We definitely were not young punk rockers,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We identified with the corrosion aspect.”<\/p>\n

Horowitz describes Gypsy swing as a lively, cheerful and enthusiastic style of music that blends traditional melodies with American jazz.<\/p>\n

“It evolved from the harsh but romanticised lifestyle of nomadic caravan life, where people would sit around campfires and make music together,” he said.<\/p>\n

The improvisational nature of the style particularly appealed to Horowitz, who began as a violinist before later picking up the saxophone.<\/p>\n

“The scope for considerable improvisation with acoustic instruments is what really made it attractive to me,” he said.<\/p>\n

Based in the Northern Rivers, the Acid Bleed lineup has incorporated a diverse range of members over the years, including doctors, lawyers, engineers, police officers and firefighters, as well as professional musicians.<\/p>\n

“It’s a mixed bag of people, half of whom are now retired,” Horowitz said.<\/p>\n

The current lineup consists of Horowitz on violin and saxophone, Josh Kirk on double bass, Jimmy Chiu on modern flamenco guitar, Veronica Lovejoy on vocals, Dave Caldwell on guitar, and Dave Hirst on drums.<\/p>\n

Over the years, Acid Bleed has collected memorable experiences that span continents, including a tour of Hong Kong in 2016.<\/p>\n

But for Horowitz, one of the most vivid performances came much closer to home.<\/p>\n

“I recall us playing at the Hotel Metropole Lismore at a fundraising gig between the two big floods in February and March of 2022,” Horowitz said.<\/p>\n

“Driving into Lismore that night, everything was pitch black and eerie as the electricity had not been reconnected.”<\/p>\n

“The Metropole however was full of people and powered by diesel generators so it was lit and we could play.”<\/p>\n

“Everyone was incredibly appreciative, and we had a great night.”<\/p>\n

Part of what makes Acid Bleed’s gigs at local venues like the Condong Bowling Club so special, Horowitz said, is the role these spaces play in the community.<\/p>\n

“Venues like the Condong Bowls Club, and also the Lismore City Bowls Club are traditional cornerstones of the community,” he said.<\/p>\n

“They offer a base for people to gather and enjoy different forms of entertainment.”<\/p>\n

For Horowitz, the power of music lies partly in escape and diversity.<\/p>\n

“It’s not just entertainment; it’s inspiration,” he said.<\/p>\n

“There is a need for cultural enrichment beyond the mundane and the everyday.”<\/p>\n

Acid Bleed will play at Condong Bowling Club on 27 March at 6.30pm and will be supported by The Early Birds.<\/p>\n
