{"id":114477,"date":"2026-03-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=114477"},"modified":"2026-03-25T22:50:32","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T11:50:32","slug":"demons-hope-to-play-key-role-in-northern-rivers-aussie-rules-revival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/sport\/demons-hope-to-play-key-role-in-northern-rivers-aussie-rules-revival\/","title":{"rendered":"Demons hope to play key role in Northern Rivers Aussie Rules revival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Northern Rivers Aussie Rules competition will expand to eight teams this season as the Nimbin Demons build momentum from a strong recruitment drive.<\/p>\n<p>The social competition returns for its second year in May as organisers continue working towards the long term goal of re-establishing a senior men&#8217;s competition in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had about 30 blokes register their interest already, which is a big jump on this time last year and a really positive sign for the season ahead,&#8221; Demons captain Will Alexander said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also done really well with sponsors in the off season. We&#8217;ve got four or five strong supporters on board, and one of them is helping us out with a full new kit, which is fantastic for the club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Getting back to training at Demon Park at the Nimbin Showgrounds has been unreal. It&#8217;s great to be back on our home ground and building that connection again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The competition continues to gather momentum, with the Tweed Tigers entering a side this year and more than 350 players expected to feature across clubs from Ballina, Byron Bay, Casino and Lismore.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123864\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123864\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/525243665_1221455646_98267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Demons captain Will Alexander (right) will lead the Nimbin club into its season season in the Northern Rivers competition. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lennox Head returns after forming a club last season, while the Demons remain focused on their rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>The club also hosted the Nimbin Headers soccer team in a Gaelic football exhibition during the pre season and hopes to expand the concept in future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The competition is really growing. We&#8217;re expecting more than 350 players across eight teams this year, which shows how strong Aussie Rules is becoming in the Northern Rivers,&#8221; Alexander said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting to see the mix of traditional clubs and newer teams coming through. There&#8217;s a real sense that this is the start of a new era for footy in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having all eight teams based between Tweed and Casino makes a huge difference.
