A NEW offshore artificial reef has been installed off Ballina, with a second set to be deployed off Coffs Harbour in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
The reef sits about 3.5 kilometres offshore from Patchs Beach in 32 metres of water and is designed to replicate a natural reef environment.<\/p>\n
Fish are expected to begin colonising the structure within a year, with species such as mackerel, snapper and mulloway likely to be attracted.<\/p>\n
The project is funded through the Recreational Fishing Trust and Marine Estate Management Strategy, with each reef costing $1.35 million.<\/p>\n
The installations bring the total number of offshore artificial reefs along the NSW coast to 13.<\/p>\n
Minister for agriculture and regional NSW Tara Moriarty said the reefs would expand fishing opportunities for locals and visitors.<\/p>\n
