{"id":115065,"date":"2026-04-23T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=115065"},"modified":"2026-04-23T15:24:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T05:24:35","slug":"poppies-on-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/poppies-on-parade\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of homemade poppies line Murwillumbah bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THOUSANDS of handmade poppies now line the Murwillumbah bridge, forming a striking Anzac Day display created by local volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>The installation, known as Poppies on Parade, has been led by the Rotary Club of Mt Warning AM for the past five years, with the display going up a week before Anzac Day and remaining in place for a week after.<\/p>\n<p>Long-time Rotary member Kaileen Casey said the handmade poppy installation brings together a wide range of volunteers with a strong sense of community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a really good group of proactive members in our club,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter if you can sew, or whether you&#8217;re a male or female, everybody comes to help put it up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Casey said the fact the display had never been vandalised reflected the respect held by the local community for those who served.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is down to the respect that the people of Murwillumbah have for the soldiers who have gone away and come home, or those who haven&#8217;t,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Casey said the project began with a simple call-out and quickly drew strong support from local crafters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124764\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124764\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/IMG_2675_45123.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Handmade poppies form the words \u201cLest We Forget\u201d on Murwillumbah Bridge. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the first year, we just put the word out for people to make poppies, and we were overwhelmed by the response,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>What followed was a steady stream of handmade contributions from across the community, many from knitters and crocheters who turned their skills into an act of remembrance.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Casey estimates more than 15,000 poppies have been used.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the contributions have come with their own quiet stories, including poppies sent from England during COVID by a grandmother of local children who was unable to travel but wanted to contribute.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are lots of little stories of wonderful people making this project work,&#8221; Casey said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just one person, it brings all kinds of people out of the woodwork.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once collected, the poppies are sewn onto lengths of plastic gutter guard to help them hold their shape in the weather.<\/p>\n<p>Groups of volunteers gather to do the work, often over morning tea, turning the preparation into a social ritual.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124765\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124765\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/IMG_2667_53133.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thousands of handmade poppies now line the Murwillumbah bridge as part of the Poppies on Parade installation, which has been led by the Rotary Club of Mt. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really good for the soul,&#8221; Casey said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That old fashioned thing of sewing and knitting in groups of women is so valued and I think sometimes we miss that these days.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rotary members then work in small teams to secure the panels along the bridge using donated cable ties, transforming thousands of individual poppies into a single flowing tribute in just a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p>The project also carries personal meaning for many involved.<\/p>\n<p>Several Rotary members, including Casey, have had children serve overseas, while a separate poppy installation at the base of Mt St Patrick College honours local soldier Nathan Bewes, whose death in 2009 deeply affected the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a way for us to remember,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>With plans to expand the display further in years to come, the Rotary Club is calling on the community to pick up their needles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d love more poppies,&#8221; Casey said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anyone who can knit or crochet, we&#8217;d love them to be part of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THOUSANDS of handmade poppies now line the Murwillumbah bridge, forming a striking Anzac Day display created by local volunteers.
