{"id":115285,"date":"2026-05-05T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=115285"},"modified":"2026-04-29T23:52:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:52:42","slug":"from-punk-band-drummer-to-byron-shire-councillor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/from-punk-band-drummer-to-byron-shire-councillor\/","title":{"rendered":"From punk band drummer to Byron Shire councillor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW Byron Shire councillor has stepped into the role with a focus on housing, infrastructure and preserving the region&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Doherty said his priorities include advancing the completion of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail through the shire, helping address the housing crisis and supporting sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>A drummer in a punk band in his youth, he is also passionate about strengthening the local arts and live music scene.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the scenes, he has been working to help reopen much-loved community venue The Bowlo in Bangalow, which was shuttered last October.<\/p>\n<p>Doherty joined council following a countback from the 2024 local government election after the resignation of fellow Bangalow resident councillor Asren Pugh in March.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have known Asren for years and it feels like a natural progression,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125229\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-125229\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/PeterDohertyleftin_15226-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Doherty (left) in the punk band Stretcher Case. We share similar values.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Originally from England, Doherty met his future wife, a Byron Bay local, while travelling as a backpacker.<\/p>\n<p>The couple settled in the Northern Rivers in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Doherty now works as an advanced scheduler in home care with the not-for-profit, Christian-based organisation BaptistCare. A father of two, Doherty also co-founded Bangalow Koalas in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He was previously a member of the Labour Party in the UK and said he joined the ALP because it stands for social justice, equality, workers&#8217; rights and a fair go for all citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Doherty said he is looking forward to contributing to decision-making in the region. &#8220;It&#8217;s an exciting opportunity and a chance to make a difference and give back to the community,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW Byron Shire councillor has stepped into the role with a focus on housing, infrastructure and preserving the region&#8217;s character.
