{"id":115456,"date":"2026-05-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=115456"},"modified":"2026-05-06T20:17:05","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T10:17:05","slug":"curtis-claims-breakthrough-pro-junior-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/sport\/curtis-claims-breakthrough-pro-junior-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtis claims breakthrough pro junior win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RISING surfer Ocea Curtis has secured her first professional junior title with a breakthrough win at North Narrabeen in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old, who represents Lennox-Ballina Boardriders Club, delivered a standout performance in the final, overcoming a strong field that included local favourite Ruby Trew.<\/p>\n<p>Her win places her among an elite group of past champions at the event, including Sally Fitzgibbons, Laura Enever and Sierra Kerr.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis, who has previously represented Australia at the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships, said the victory was a long time coming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m stoked, the girls were ripping in the final,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m staying with Ruby Trew at her house, and it got close at the end.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125461\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125461\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-125461\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/OceaCurtisR5AC5327-A_72936.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Curtis on her way to winning the women&#8217;s pro junior final. I&#8217;ve been doing these pro juniors for a while and I&#8217;m glad to finally win one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Curtis will have the opportunity to build on her momentum at home, with Lennox Head set to host the Pro Junior division of the Oz Grom Open in July.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s division, Dane Henry continued his rapid rise, claiming victory in the Pro Junior final.<\/p>\n<p>The Tweed Heads surfer, who is the reigning World Surf League World Junior Championship winner, posted an outstanding 9.87 to help secure the title.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125462\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125462\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-125462\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/DaneHenry_ProJun26_D_75959.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tweed surfer Dane Henry continued his run of form with another pro junior win. Photo: WSL\/Matt Dunbar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The wind puffed up perfectly for me, so I just wanted to surf how I like and ended up getting two real good scores,&#8221; Henry said. &#8220;So, I&#8217;m really, really excited and happy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Henry&#8217;s victory adds to an impressive 18-month run, which includes winning gold for Australia at the ISA World Surfing Games in El Salvador.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, he also secured a junior world title at the ISA level, placing him among a select group of surfers to hold both junior and open world crowns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RISING surfer Ocea Curtis has secured her first professional junior title with a breakthrough win at North Narrabeen in Sydney.
