AI, global conflict, climate change, economic decline, the growing influence of tech billionaires and authoritarian regimes. If it feels like a lot is happening at once, you’re not imagining it. And if you’re hoping things will return to “normal”, Sarah Wilson has some bad news.<\/p>\n

The former Cosmopolitan magazine editor, series one MasterChef Australia host and bestselling I Quit Sugar author believes our civilisation is on the brink of collapse \u2013 and it’s too late to do anything about it.<\/p>\n

“I think a lot of people are saying, ‘hang on, how can all this be happening at once?” she said. “The answer is because this is how it goes. This is what collapse looks like \u2013 you’re not going mad. It’s an interconnected crisis, known as the metacrisis.”<\/p>\n

Wilson has spent more than a decade interviewing experts on the topic for her new book, I Eat the Stars: How to Live Fully and Beautifully in a Collapsing World, which she will discuss at an upcoming Byron Writers Festival event at Elements of Byron resort.<\/p>\n

“A lot of this is being discussed in rarified academic circles, alternative communities and government think tanks,” she said. “I have worked out that the way I can be of service is connecting complex information to everyday people.”<\/p>\n

Wilson argues that all complex civilisations in history have eventually collapsed, most within roughly 250 to 300 years \u2013 the same approximate age of our current post-industrial civilisation. But unlike the Roman or Mayan Empires, today’s civilisation is global.<\/p>\n

“Civilisations collapse when they become so complex the human brain can no longer solve the problems that arise,” she said. “A lot of complex civilisations got taken down by a pandemic. There are so many systems but it really only takes one or two to start to collapse to trip all the others. The conflict happening in the Middle East is a massive one. There’s also the collapse of democracy because we have leaders like Trump making dictator-like judgements. If oil goes to US$150 a barrel economic collapse is pretty much guaranteed. AI is another system with all kinds of other systems attached to it. It’s going to use more water than the world is able to provide and it’s going to cause huge strain.”<\/p>\n

Wilson said civilisational collapse doesn’t happen like in movies like Mad Max. It’s slow at first, then accelerates.<\/p>\n

“We’ll probably recover a bit and then on it goes until it speeds up,” she said. “There are no fixes or solutions to this. We’ve missed the deadline for renewables. We can’t stop what’s happening and we need to deal with the fact that this is going to be really uncertain and prepare ourselves for more discomfort.”<\/p>\n

Having built resilience after natural disasters like floods and cyclones, Wilson said Northern Rivers communities are better placed than many to face what lies ahead \u2013 including living without petrol, electricity or the internet.<\/p>\n

As well as simplifying our lives and learning to rely less on technology, she recommends sending children to scouts or bush school and embracing a community-focused approach known as “prosocial prepping” \u2013 building relationships with neighbours, joining food co-ops and strengthening local networks, rather than retreating into isolating or “lone-wolf” survivalism.<\/p>\n
