A specialist consultant team will begin work on four precinct plans for flood-affected buyback land across Lismore as part of efforts to shape the city’s future after the 2022 disaster.<\/p>\n

The project is a joint initiative between Lismore City Council and the NSW Reconstruction Authority and focuses on land no longer considered suitable for residential use following the floods.<\/p>\n

Community consultation will continue throughout the year, with residents and businesses invited to provide feedback on preferred future uses for the precincts.<\/p>\n

Mayor Steve Krieg said appointing the consultant team marked an important step forward for the city, with community-led planning remaining a priority.<\/p>\n

“We’ve started conversations with the Reconstruction Authority about piloting practical uses on selected parcels, including additional parking for The Showgrounds and exploring commercial opportunities in South Lismore,” he said.<\/p>\n

“These are the kinds of initiatives that support local business and improve functionality while the broader planning work continues.<\/p>\n

“Engaging a specialist consultant team ensures technical rigour, creativity and prioritised community engagement will guide this broader approach for the future of these precincts.”<\/p>\n

The consultant team, led by REALMstudios, brings experience in climate resilience, urban design, landscape architecture, engineering, environmental science and community engagement.<\/p>\n

Lismore MP and NSW Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin said the project represented an important milestone in the region’s flood recovery journey.<\/p>\n

“With a significant number of voluntary buybacks now complete in Lismore, the NSW Government through the Reconstruction Authority is shifting its focus to how this land can best support safety, resilience and long-term community outcomes,” she said.<\/p>\n

“This work will be undertaken in close partnership with Lismore City Council and the community to explore a range of future land use options that will inform future decisions.<\/p>\n

“By integrating flood risk, planning controls and local priorities, I want to help ensure the future use of the buyback land reflects our lived experience together with sound technical evidence.”<\/p>\n
