Photo: NSW Education.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms Kachel, who works with Sawtell Kitchens, was recognised for her achievements in cabinet making and timber technology.<\/p>\n<p>She said the trade appealed to her because it combined technical precision with practical, hands-on work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I chose cabinet making as a career pathway because it offers a strong balance between technical precision and hands-on practical work,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126199\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126199\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/JamesCoates-Aborigin_68245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tweed mechanic James Coates won the Aboriginal &amp; Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year. NSW Education.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Throughout my apprenticeship, I have developed the ability to work independently, along with strong communication skills when working with co-workers, other tradespeople, and clients.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Justin Booth took out the Trainee of the Year award for his work in the energy sector while completing a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice through Essential Energy and Apprenticeship Careers Australia.<\/p>\n<p>He said the traineeship had provided valuable real-world experience while strengthening his understanding of project management.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was drawn to project management because I enjoy problem solving, coordinating work, and being involved in projects where I can see the real-world outcomes of what I have helped deliver,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The qualification has given me a structured understanding of how projects come together, while the traineeship has allowed me to apply that learning immediately in a practical environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126200\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126200\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/CharliFowler-VETinSc_74136.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charli Fowler won the VET in Schools Student of the Year.
