“When they park their bikes, they come in here with a bit of ownership, that this is me.”<\/p>\n
Reid said the program had been a “massive success”.<\/p>\n
“We’re getting a lot of positive feedback from it, and I’m glad, and we’ll push forward from here, because this is the start of good things,” he said.<\/p>\n
Year 10 student Harvey Jack Sullivan said the numbered plate system had changed the way he approached riding in public.<\/p>\n
“When I don’t have it on I definitely ride a bit differently, but when it’s on, I’m definitely a lot more safe,” he said.<\/p>\n
The initiative comes amid ongoing discussion about e-bike safety across the Northern Rivers, with concerns often centred on unsafe riding behaviour among young people.<\/p>\n
E Bike Safety Australia director Ben Horwood said the organisation was established after identifying gaps in education around youth e-bike use and concerns about rider behaviour.<\/p>\n
“We were originally founded because we saw there was an issue out there with young e-bike riders, and the behaviour was essentially intolerable,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We wanted to bring education to the picture, just to show young people, these are the actual rules…”<\/p>\n
“And also other things like what to do in case of an accident, how to maintain your bike, what to look for to keep it safe, all those kinds of things.”<\/p>\n
Horwood said the organisation initially focused on education before introducing the identification plate system after recognising accountability was also needed.<\/p>\n
“We realised we needed to bring an accountability part into the picture, and that’s when we started implementing the ID tags,” he said.<\/p>\n
“So the student ID tags, it uses the existing ecosystem within a school, which is their privacy documentation and all of those kinds of things, and we provide the plates, we provide the actual database, and then that’s handed away to the school, and they manage all of that minor information.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
