FANS may not have known it at the time, but the week before auditioning for Australian Idol, Dylan Wright was at the lowest point of his life.<\/p>\n

Having moved to the Northern Rivers just a few months earlier, Wright was working as a painter while grappling with the pressures of having two young children and feeling directionless.<\/p>\n

“I was feeling like I didn’t really have a purpose or people around me who understood,” he said. “I felt really isolated and alone. I was at a point where I didn’t want to be here anymore and felt so alone and misunderstood.”<\/p>\n

But he decided to keep going. A few days later, while sitting on a paint tin at a house in the Tweed waiting for paint to dry, he received a message from producers at Australian Idol who had come across his music and invited him to audition.<\/p>\n

He had previously received similar messages from producers from The Voice and The X Factor, but this time he decided to take the chance.<\/p>\n

“The cut-off was 30 and I was 30,” he said. “It felt like the stars had aligned and if I was going to continue to be here I was going to make the most of every opportunity.”<\/p>\n

While Wright was open about parts of his personal life on Idol \u2013 including caring for his mother, who had multiple sclerosis, as a teenager and losing her when he was 21 \u2013 he kept his mental health struggles private during the competition, which he went on to win in 2024. “I didn’t want to broadcast that on national television, it was still pretty raw,” he said.<\/p>\n

Now, however, he has decided to open up through his new single, Escape to the Other Side, which captures that difficult period in his life.<\/p>\n

“This song is all about looking into yourself, seeing what you can fix and working through adversity,” he said. “What got me through that was music and finding purpose again.”<\/p>\n

Ahead of releasing his new EP, Crossroads, on 10 July, the Bangalow-based singer has been touring his Songs and Stories tour, a show that leans heavily into emotions and vulnerability.<\/p>\n

“A lot of men are pretty good at pushing through their feelings and emotions,” he said. “This tour is about telling my stories and getting other people to talk about what they’re going through. I’ve had men come up to me after the show to tell me their story and break down and cry.<\/p>\n

“A lot of the songs on the EP are quite sad and then it gets happy. There’s positivity.”<\/p>\n

Other songs on the EP include Those Nights, a nostalgic reflection on how quickly time passes, inspired by memories of riding bikes and spending carefree days with friends during his childhood.<\/p>\n

While winning Idol provided Wright with a major platform and a record deal with Sony Music, he said there can still be prejudice in the music industry towards reality TV winners.<\/p>\n

“They think you’re trying to take the easy route by going on a TV show, so in a sense I felt like I had to work harder,” he said.<\/p>\n

After winning the competition, Wright wrote 20 songs in two weeks, released an EP and embarked on a national tour.<\/p>\n

“It’s all about grassroots and getting out into the community,” he said. “You have to earn your stripes.”<\/p>\n

Looking back, Wright describes Australian Idol as an incredible experience. “I never thought I was going to win so I never had that pressure on myself,” he said. “I just wanted to make the most of it.”<\/p>\n

While he is best known for his solo career \u2013 which still carries country influences but now leans more toward indie-folk \u2013 Wright’s music spans several genres.<\/p>\n

Last year he travelled to Nashville for three days of songwriting with hitmakers through the Australasian Performing Right Association and also performed at CMA Fest.<\/p>\n

He was nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Country Album for Half the World Away last year and won his first Golden Guitar earlier this year for Bluegrass Album of the Year with his band Sons of Atticus for Born to Roam.<\/p>\n

Soon, he will head to war-torn Ukraine to perform with his electronic outfit, Breathe. “We’ve had over 100 million streams worldwide,” he said. “We did our first shows in Turkey and our next biggest audiences are Ukraine and Russia. It will be a good experience to see first-hand what’s going on, how the locals live day to day and try to give them as much love and support as we can.<\/p>\n

“When we were in Turkey we chatted to people fleeing war in Syria, and in Australia I’m often visiting people who are suffering through drought or lost everything through floods.” When he’s not on tour, Wright says his favourite moments are the simple ones \u2013 like doing school and preschool drop-offs for his daughters, aged six and three. “The reason why I do music is for them and giving them the life they deserve,” he said.<\/p>\n
