{"id":116426,"date":"2026-06-25T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=116426"},"modified":"2026-06-25T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T18:00:00","slug":"no-sale-no-silence-bangalow-community-rejects-norths-collectives-2-million-bowlo-buyback-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/no-sale-no-silence-bangalow-community-rejects-norths-collectives-2-million-bowlo-buyback-offer\/","title":{"rendered":"No sale, no silence: Bangalow community rejects Norths Collective\u2019s $2 million Bowlo buyback offer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Bangalow community has rejected an offer from Norths Collective to continue negotiations to buy back the local bowling club for $2 million and continue pursuing legal action against the Sydney-based conglomerate.<\/p>\n<p>With negotiations now stalled, expressions of interest (EOIs) will open on 14 July for the club to amalgamate with another club within a 50-kilometre radius, potentially including Ballina&#8217;s Cherry Street Sports Club, Byron Bay Services Club or Club Byron.<\/p>\n<p>Around 200 people gathered in the club car park on Sunday afternoon, seated on eskies, pallets and camp chairs, for what was at times a fiery community meeting to discuss the proposed buyback option.<\/p>\n<p>Norths Collective took over the struggling Bangalow Bowling Club through an amalgamation in November 2022, absorbing approximately $800,000 in club debt.<\/p>\n<p>But the organisation closed The Bowlo with little warning last October, citing ongoing financial losses and the poor condition of the clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>The closure sparked widespread community anger, with locals raising more than $100,000 to demonstrate support for a locally owned and operated business model.<\/p>\n<p>Norths rejected an initial community buyback proposal based on the original 2022 stabilisation cost of about $680,000, instead insisting on a figure closer to $2 million to cover what it says were its costs and losses associated with the venue.<\/p>\n<p>But with the matter receiving widespread media coverage the organisation made it a condition of continuing negotiations that the community cease publicly criticising it.<\/p>\n<p>Norths gave the Bangalow community until 14 July to present an acceptable business model before it begins seeking EOIs from other clubs interested in amalgamating with or taking over the venue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127303\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127303\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/AnaerialviewofTheBow_27672.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An aerial view of The Bowlo. Photo: Saul Goodwin-Property Shot Photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two separate community groups have emerged in response to the closure.<\/p>\n<p>The Bangalow Advisory Committee has acted as an intermediary in ongoing negotiations with Norths in an effort to return the club to community ownership, while The Save Bangalow Bowlo Steering Committee is pursuing legal action against Norths, alleging breaches of the Memorandum of Understanding in several key areas.<\/p>\n<p>These include claims that Norths failed to complete repairs, upgrades and maintenance required for building compliance, did not meet agreed financial spending commitments and closed the club within three years of the amalgamation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The buyback option is absolutely preposterous and must be dismissed by any clear-thinking member of the club,&#8221; well-known local Greg Nash told the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Norths don&#8217;t deserve to walk away from this scot-free. When you make mistakes in corporate life you have to pay for your mistakes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Should the process move to an EOI stage, ClubsNSW would likely play a key role in facilitating any amalgamation discussions.
