{"id":116466,"date":"2026-06-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=116466"},"modified":"2026-06-26T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T18:00:00","slug":"inside-byron-bays-luxury-new-hotel-the-bonobo-by-raes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/inside-byron-bays-luxury-new-hotel-the-bonobo-by-raes\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside Byron Bay\u2019s luxury new hotel The Bonobo by Raes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER months of construction delays caused by wet weather, The Bonobo by Raes has officially opened its doors on Jonson Street in Byron Bay.<\/p>\n<p>The highly anticipated luxury hotel features 74 guest rooms and hotel residences, some with private plunge pools, with rates starting from $355 per night.<\/p>\n<p>The property spans three levels and includes a central courtyard and rooftop pool with views over bushland and stretching towards the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>A public Lobby Lounge on the ground floor is now open, while a curated menswear boutique by Byron-born label Atlas Homme is set to open in July. Additional retail spaces are expected to follow in spring.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127403\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127403\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/TheBonobocourtyard.P_07452.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The central courtyard in The Bonobo. Photo: Sean Fennessy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A wellness studio operated by Double Bay-based Reset, offering traditional cedar saunas, ice baths, a eucalyptus steam room, magnesium bath and vitamin C-infused showers, will also open in July. It will feature a private treatment room providing LED light therapy, facials and restorative body treatments open to both hotel guests and the community.<\/p>\n<p>The building was designed by architecture firm Richards &amp; Spence, known for Brisbane\u2019s The Calile Hotel, with interiors by Studio Manifold.<\/p>\n<p>While the building\u2019s modernist brick fa\u00e7ade has attracted criticism from some locals on social media, with comparisons to a 1970s housing commission building and even a toilet block, Raes Group general manager Marty McCaig said the experience changes once visitors enter the property.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127404\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127404\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/TherooftoppoolatTheB_11666.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rooftop pool has views over bushland. Photo: Sean Fennessy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have added some landscaping and once it grows it will start to soften,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the outside it\u2019s a bit deceiving but once people step inside into the courtyard in the middle it\u2019s like an oasis. We want people to feel like they\u2019re in Byron Bay but not on Jonson Street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCaig said plans are also underway for a gelato bar aimed at families, where parents can stop in after school pick-up at nearby Byron Bay Public School while children play on the lawn. Vinyl DJs are also expected to perform on weekends during summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Lobby Lounge seats up to 110 guests across its main lounge, terrace and courtyard, with large sliding windows connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127405\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127405\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/TheBonobolobby.Photo_14372.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The reception desk at The Bonobo. Photo: Sean Fennessy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty similar to what we do in terms of the Cellar Bar at Raes on Wategos in terms of the style and format, but the menu will be slightly more elevated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel\u2019s food and beverage offering has been curated by Raes Dining Room executive chef Jason Saxby alongside The Bonobo head chef Callum Gray.<\/p>\n<p>Menu highlights include the Bonobo Club Sanga, featuring fried chicken presse, bacon jam and dijonnaise, alongside The Bonobo Lager, brewed exclusively for the property.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127406\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127406\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127406\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/TheBonoboHotelReside_16870.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A residence at The Bonobo.
