WHEN a severely injured Northern Quoll arrived at Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital (NRWH), it sparked an all-out effort involving veterinarians, wildlife carers and specialist surgeons determined to give the unique marsupial a second chance.<\/p>\n

Ned had been found on a property in Eureka, well outside the species’ normal range. His arrival came as a surprise to the hospital team \u2013 not only because of the location, but because Northern Quolls are an endangered species. A DNA sample has been sent to the Australian Museum for further analysis to help researchers better understand the unusual sighting.<\/p>\n

But it was Ned’s injuries that required immediate attention.<\/p>\n

He arrived at NRWH with a fractured jaw and burns to all four feet, including second-degree burns to both hind feet. While Dr Chantal Whitten and the hospital team immediately began treating his burns, the severity of the jaw injury meant specialist surgery was required.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the generosity of Dr Gordon Corfield and the team at Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS) in Carrara, Ned underwent surgery to repair the fracture using a tiny 1.5mm plate.<\/p>\n

Following the procedure, Ned returned to NRWH, where he quickly regained his appetite and began putting on weight.<\/p>\n

To prepare him for life back in the wild, the hospital team collaborated with the WIRES Northern Rivers branch to utilise one of their portable rehabilitation enclosures to create a secure outdoor rehabilitation space for the increasingly adventurous patient. Ned has now moved into his outdoor enclosure, where he can rebuild his strength and gradually readjust to life outdoors.<\/p>\n

While he still has some healing ahead, the move marks a significant step towards his eventual release.<\/p>\n

As NRWH’s End of Financial Year Appeal continues, Ned’s story is a reminder that saving wildlife takes an all-out effort. With the support of the community more native animals, including threatened and endangered species, can receive the emergency treatment, specialist care and rehabilitation they need, giving patients like Ned the opportunity to return to the wild where they belong.<\/p>\n
