BALLINA Shire Council hosted local high school students for a community ideas session with the group pitching ideas on flood-monitoring technology and support for the homeless.<\/p>\n
As part of Youth Week, students from Ballina Coast High School and Richmond Christian College presented their projects to Ballina Shire councillors in the council chambers, showcasing creative concepts aimed at improving community wellbeing.<\/p>\n
Among the proposals were an underwater drone to monitor waterways and strengthen disaster preparedness, a Clean Clothes Kit initiative for people experiencing homelessness, early career support programs for younger students and the creation of a dedicated youth centre for Ballina.<\/p>\n
Ballina Shire Council social and community development officer Kiara Williams said the students’ creativity and commitment to their community was inspiring.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe students demonstrated incredible creativity, insight and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in their community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat stood out was not only the strength of the ideas, but the passion behind them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese young people have identified real issues, thought carefully about potential solutions and shown a willingness to take action.\u201d<\/p>\n
The presentations gave students the opportunity to share their ideas directly with local decision-makers while gaining valuable experience in public speaking, project development and civic participation.<\/p>\n
The event also marked the start of the next stage of the students’ journey through the Ideas2Life program, where mentoring, coaching and practical support will help participants further develop their concepts and explore ways to bring them to life.<\/p>\n
Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the presentations highlighted the value of giving young people a voice in shaping the community’s future.<\/p>\n
