{"id":116780,"date":"2026-07-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=116780"},"modified":"2026-07-10T19:04:33","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T09:04:33","slug":"graffiti-attack-leaves-business-owner-facing-20000-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/graffiti-attack-leaves-business-owner-facing-20000-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Graffiti attack leaves business owner facing $20,000 bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Tweed business owner says she is facing a $20,000 repainting bill after offensive graffiti was sprayed across her property, in what she believes reflects a growing vandalism problem across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Jo Mitchell, who runs A1 Skips alongside her husband, was away in Queensland when she received a phone call from a neighbour telling her their property on Naru Street had been vandalised.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were in Charleville, Queensland, when we received a call from our neighbour opposite to let us know,&#8221; Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They told us that they saw three people hanging around late afternoon wearing black hoodies. They were driving a white Subaru station wagon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said she and her husband had invested heavily in developing their Naru Street properties and had worked hard to keep them well maintained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My husband and I have built this facility on 16 Naru Street and recently purchased the block behind at 14 Naru Street,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have been successful in keeping the front wall clean and tidy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/07\/grafonJoMitchellswa_44300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"440\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Offensive graffiti on Mitchell&#8217;s property wall. Photo: Jo Mitchell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do regular inspections to check the fence, so we know the wall has been given a total once-over, even after painting over existing graffiti from 25, 26 or 27 June.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said the financial impact of the latest incident was significant, with repainting alone expected to cost around $20,000.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Personally, it is terribly upsetting. It is upsetting that they are getting away with it as they do it in the dead of night like little rats,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is our property and we have worked hard for it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Financially we are looking at around $20,000 just to repaint, with no guarantee it won&#8217;t be painted over again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to have to increase security surveillance, which is another cost, with no guarantee it will prevent future vandalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said the incident reflected what she believed was a growing graffiti problem across the Tweed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You just need to take a drive around Tweed to see it with your own eyes,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Total disrespect for the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said other business owners had reached out following the incident to share similar experiences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have had people on my Facebook posts mention that they too have been violated by graffiti,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/07\/1000019682_42823.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"421\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mitchell said the incident reflected what she believed was a growing graffiti problem across the Tweed. Photo: Jo Mitchell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While acknowledging the difficulty of preventing graffiti attacks carried out under the cover of darkness, Mitchell questioned how vandals were able to target highly visible stretches of the motorway without being detected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What can be done? The vandalism is done when there are no people around to stop them,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really don&#8217;t know how graffiti is appearing along the motorway without anyone seeing it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Council shouldn&#8217;t have to be concerned about graffiti. It shouldn&#8217;t be a thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell had a blunt message for those responsible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is ugly vandalism of personal and public property,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is nothing visually appealing about any of it anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please stop and get yourselves another hobby.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Tweed business owner says she is facing a $20,000 repainting bill after offensive graffiti was sprayed across her property, in what she believes reflects a growing vandalism problem across the region.
