But in the end I prevailed because it looked like I got my shit together.”

The 55-year-old, who has been described as country music’s answer to Janis Joplin, said she had used alcohol in the past to overcome her shyness.

“On stage I’m hyperactive, vivacious and energetic, but it’s been very difficult throughout my life to fabricate that without having a couple of alcoholic beverages to connect with people,” she said. “I still do that but I can control myself more now than I used to.”

The Tamworth-based singer has loved country music for as long as she can remember. At the age of three, she figured out how to climb up to the record player and play her parents’ records, and said she could sing before she could walk.

She has always been drawn to the rawness of honky tonk – the upbeat subgenre of country music traditionally played in working-class bars and dance halls across the United States, known for its driving rhythms and songs about heartbreak, drinking and hard living.

“To me modern country music is a commercial form of music that should be called something else,” she said.

Many of Bahtiyar’s songs explore themes of social justice and prejudice. As a child, she secretly sheltered and fed homeless Aboriginal people in her parents’ garden shed, sneaking food out to them. As an adult, she continued opening her home to people in need.

One of her songs, Brian’s Song, tells the story of a homeless man she befriended who lived with schizophrenia and used illicit drugs before dying beneath a park bench in Brisbane.

Equal and Free examines slavery, while In Rivers of Love brings together issues that concern her, including pollution and racism.

Her latest album, Facets, which she hopes to release during the 2027 Tamworth Country Music Festival, blends several musical styles. It includes a track called Merry Go Round, about mental health, which combines country and rap – or, as she calls it, “crap”.

Bahtiyar is looking forward to returning to this year’s Mullum Roots Festival, saying she loves its “realness”.

“It doesn’t have the gestapo-esque feel of big festivals like the Tamworth Country Music Festival, with cops and sniffer dogs everywhere,” she said. “There’s no judgemental attitude.”

Wanita Queen of Honkytonk will perform at the Top Pub in Mullumbimby at the Mullum Roots Festival at 2pm Saturday 11 July and 3.30pm on Sunday 12 July.

For more information and tickets, visit mullumrootsfest.com

WHEN Wanita Bahtiyar was invited to perform at the Top Pub in Mullumbimby during last year’s inaugural Mullum Roots Festival after another artist cancelled at the last minute, there had been no time to promote the show.
