SHE’S spent years behind the lens on glamorous fashion shoots, but Byron Bay photographer Radka Honzova discovered her most meaningful work among the children of a Kenyan orphanage<\/p>\n

The founder of the First Roll Project gave 60 children at Kiota Kids disposable cameras to document life from their own perspective. Their photographs were showcased at a fundraising exhibition at Nowe Studios in Bangalow on Sunday night, which attracted more than 150 people.<\/p>\n

Originally from Slovakia, Honzova moved to Byron Bay in 2024 where she met Kiota Kids founder Lindsey Arrillaga through mutual friends.<\/p>\n

California-born Arrillaga established the orphanage in 2023 after visiting Kenya. The registered community-based organisation provides a safe home, education, healthcare, nutritious meals and ongoing support for children who have experienced extreme poverty, homelessness or family crisis.<\/p>\n

About six months after they first met, the pair ran into each other again while Honzova was exhibiting her photography at a local event.<\/p>\n

“We were standing there chatting when I suddenly said, ‘You should give cameras to the kids. It would be so cool to see life from their perspective’,” she said.<\/p>\n

Without hesitating, Arrillaga replied, “Why don’t you come and do it?”. A year later, Honzova was on a plane to the East African nation.<\/p>\n

“It honestly came from one simple thought: what would their lives look like through their own eyes?” she said.<\/p>\n

“So often, children who have experienced difficult circumstances are photographed by other people. Their stories are told by someone else. I wanted to turn the camera around and give them the opportunity to show us their world, what they see, what matters to them and the moments they want to remember.<\/p>\n

“Children see the world so differently to adults. They’re curious, playful and completely honest.”<\/p>\n

Each child received a disposable camera with only minimal instructions and an invitation to photograph whatever they wanted \u2013 their friendships, laughter, daily routines, the people around them and the moments that mattered most.<\/p>\n

For many, it was the first time they had ever held a camera or been given the opportunity to tell their own story through images.<\/p>\n

The project provided the children with a creative outlet to express themselves, build confidence and share their perspective with the world.<\/p>\n

Honzova spent two weeks living at Kiota Kids before returning home with more than 1,500 photographs to review.<\/p>\n

“It was an incredible experience,” she said. “Spending every day with the children, getting to know them beyond their stories, was something I’ll never forget. They have been through so much, yet they’re full of gratitude and joy.<\/p>\n

“Considering the circumstances they grew up in, the amount of potential they have is incredible. They are so smart and capable. They just need opportunities and people who believe in them.<\/p>\n

“I honestly think an experience like this is something everyone should have at least once in their life. It teaches you so much about yourself, challenges the way you see the world, and changes your perspective on what really matters.”<\/p>\n

Although many of the photos featured fingers over the lens, accidental snaps, or blurry frames, Honzova was struck by the number of fantastic images among them.<\/p>\n

“Choosing which ones to print for the exhibition was really difficult because there were so many beautiful moments,” she said.<\/p>\n

“There were also lots of funny photos. But more than anything, there was so much life in them. They have this raw energy and honesty that many photographers spend years trying to capture.”<\/p>\n

Honzova said it was important that people understood the children’s lives beyond the images, so each child’s display included a hand-developed contact sheet showing every frame they had taken, accompanied by their story.<\/p>\n

“Above the text are images full of laughter, friendship and everyday life,” she said. “Below it is the reality of what many of these children experienced before arriving at Kiota Kids.”<\/p>\n

Among them is Christine, who was so severely malnourished and affected by stunted growth when she arrived at Kiota Kids that people believed she was only six or seven years old, despite actually being 12.<\/p>\n

She was born to a very young mother with a mental disability and an elderly father. After her mother left and her father became seriously ill and later died, Christine and her younger sister, Praise, were taken in by their grandmother. Although she loved them, she was unable to provide the care they needed and was sometimes forced to take the girls begging on the streets so they could survive.<\/p>\n

Glory lost her father and grew up with a mother living with alcohol addiction and HIV. She was forced to beg for food and search through rubbish piles to survive. When she was found, she was suffering from severe malnutrition, infections and painful jigger infestations in her feet.<\/p>\n

Blessy grew up in extreme poverty in a home marked by violence and neglect. After her mother developed a drug addiction and her stepfather refused to support the children, she also ended up living on the streets searching for food and safety.<\/p>\n

“Hearing what some of these children have experienced at such a young age is heartbreaking, but it’s incredible to see who they are today,” Honzova said. “Their past is part of who they are, but it doesn’t define them.”<\/p>\n

More than $5,000 was raised through ticket sales from the exhibition alone. The funds will support Kiota Kids by helping provide education, food, healthcare and a safe place for the children to grow up.<\/p>\n

The project was supported by Kodak, which donated the disposable cameras, while Bayou Film Lab developed the film. We Sell Prints printed the children’s photographs and Nowe Studios donated the exhibition space.<\/p>\n

Honzova now hopes the First Roll Project will continue with children and communities around the world.<\/p>\n

“That might be through exhibitions, a print shop where every sale goes back to the community, or eventually a coffee table book featuring their work,” she said.<\/p>\n
