Tweed Ride celebrates 10 years

April 20, 2022 BY

The Ballarat Tweed ride is for all ages, from the young, to the young at heart and even old souls.

DUST off your tweed, oil up your retro bike and get ready to cycle through the streets of Ballarat at the tenth annual Ballarat Tweed Ride.

Part of the Ballarat Heritage Festival, the Tweed Ride sends cyclists dressed in vintage and heritage inspired outfits of tweeds, velvets, capes and kilts, down Ballarat’s most picturesque streets.

An extremely popular event, the ride booked out within hours in 2021.

Participants and spectators alike are asked to meet at Pipers by the Lake at 10am, which is not only the ride’s starting point but also a place to mingle, take some beautiful photos of all the fantastic outfits and enjoy some live music.

Riders will then follow host Liana Skewes on a 12‐kilometre journey around Lake Wendouree, down Sturt Street, into the city centre and to Ballarat’s Civic Hall for an end‐of‐ride celebration.

Once at the Civic Hall, guests will find entertainment as well as food and drink offerings by local Tim Bone who’ll serve up his famous toasties, Mrs Browne Bakes will be delivering sweet treats, and Kilderkin Distillery offering gin cocktails.

Awards will be given out for best bikes, best outfits as well as for spectators.

As part of the 10‐year celebrations there will also be local businesses showing off their goods, as well as memorabilia for sale, including a custom poster by Ballarat artist Travis Price and a hand‐drawn map of Ballarat.

“It’s such a great experience, it’s fun, it’s relaxed, and cycling is an absolute joy,” Ms Skewes said.

“If you have been wondering what makes this event so special, the 10th anniversary is the perfect time to check it out.”

The Tweed Ride is $10 to enter and registrations are essential. All are welcome at the festivities at the Ballarat Civic Hall.

The Ballarat Tweed Ride rolls into action on Saturday, 21 May.
