THE Art Gallery of Ballarat is encouraging artists to submit online expressions of interest if they are keen to exhibit their work in the Backspace Gallery next year.

The Gallery is interested in applications from Ballarat and the region that are diverse and unique, but will accept submissions from creatives outside this area if they can show a connection to the city or their work is beneficial.

Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said Backspace wants to discover and exhibit the different backgrounds and experiences of artists, helping them to engage a public audience and develop personally.

“The Backspace Gallery is a key part of the City of Ballarat’s support for visual arts in the community and we would like the exhibition program to reflect the increasing diversity in Ballarat and the region,” she said.

“We are also interested to see how the exhibition proposals might be tied to important community events such as Harmony Fest, Reconciliation Week and Seniors Week.

“We see this as a key professional development opportunity for local artists, to work with professional staff at the gallery in selecting and preparing work for exhibition, in promoting their exhibition to the public and in dealing with members of the public face-to-face.”

All applications are assessed by a selection committee. More information can be found, and proposals can be submitted through artgalleryofballarat.com.au/gallery_exhibitions/backspace. Submissions close Friday, 21 June, 5pm.

Backspace Gallery hosts a vibrant program of contemporary art, craft and design exhibitions, celebrating our region’s visual artistic talent, and supporting them to present professionally.
