FROM 8 to 15 November, residents can join the Golden Plains Shire in celebrating NAIDOC Week in a variety of ways.

Traditionally, the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee once organised NAIDOC Week and its events as a way of celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This legacy has continued over time and is now not only celebrated by Indigenous communities, but by all Australians who wish to take part.

The theme of this year’s celebrations is Always Was, Always Will Be, to acknowledge that First Nations people have occupied on this country for over 65,000 years.

Throughout the week, the Shire will post information to its website and social media channels regarding events aimed at celebrating the people and the culture of the Wathaurong and Eastern Maar traditional owners of the land that is also known as the Golden Plains Shire.

A selection of statewide online events will also be running during the week including a variety of events from Aboriginal Housing Victoria and Yarra Libraries.

Kicking things off with a traditional damper-making workshop by Meriam chef Nornie Bero, Aboriginal Housing Victoria and Yarra Libraries are teaming up to also provide the community access to musical performances from The Merindas, Uncle Kutcha Edwards and Alice Skye.

Additionally, the National Gallery of Victoria are hosting an online art making session for children hosted by Indigenous textile designer Taylah Cole.

Aimed for primary-aged kids, the sessions will be 45-minute long artistic activities that use everyday drawing materials which are intended to get the creative juices flowing.
