CHILDREDN will begin to plant out a forest at Canadian Creek Reserve on Tuesday 30 June.

Participants under the age of 12 will have the opportunity to plant native shrubs and trees for the Friends of Canadian Corridor’s Children’s Friendship Forest.

They will take home plants and have their names included on an information sign on site.

“The idea of a children’s planting came out of a community tree planting last year at the Canadian Creek Reserve where large numbers of children helped their parents,” organiser Jane Thomson said.

“At first the idea was to have a safe area set aside for children at community tree plantings, then the idea of a special day was proposed and now it will happen.”

Thomson hoped the event would foster a care for the environment within the children and have them look at what the community can achieve when people work together.

“I’d also like to see – and I know that I’ll do it with my children – that they would come back and visit and see how that area changes and develops over time,” she said.

“Maybe seeing some more wildlife or insects and species returning into those spaces and corridors.”

The sign, she said, would also encourage a sense of stewardship.

FOCC will put 6500 plants into the ground along the Canadian Creek and its tributaries this winter as part of the Urban Ripple Project.

Community tree plantings will also be held at Canadian Creek Reserve, Canadian, on Sunday 28 June and Sunday 2 August, Dozed Track in Woowookarung Regional Park on Sunday 12 July, Lal Lal Drain off Larter Street, Canadian on Sunday 19 July, Sailors Gully Reserve on Lavery Avenue, Mount Clear on Sunday 16 August, and Soapys Dam, Elsworth Street, Canadian, on Sunday 23 August.

Bookings for the children’s forest between 10am to 12pm are essential and spaces are limited. They can be made at trybooking.com/events/landing/1589753.
