As we get readjusted to COVID-19 lockdown our cafes and eateries are closed off for dining in, there are loads of places which are providing takeaway and delivery options (thank goodness!) so we can still get our daily dose of local fare and, more importantly, strong coffee.

With that in mind here’s a list of some of the most-prized cafes, so next time you’re craving your morning cup of joe or afternoon pick-me-up, you know exactly who to call. Many of the cafes are also available on the Skip App, so you can order ahead of time, jump the queue and have your warming coffee delivered straight into your hands.

Johnny Alloo

One of the newer kids on the block, Johnny Alloo is owned by local coffee connoisseur Matt Freeman. Named after the owner of Ballarat’s first Chinese restaurant, Johnny’s is housed in a historic red brick building which has been completely renovated inside to reflect an elegant, art-deco vibe. Combine this with the fact that the Sensory Lab coffee is silky, smooth and seductive, and you have a café experience that’s hard to beat.

Webster’s Market and Café

A sure Ballarat fave, Webster’s is owned by husband-and-wife duo Jane and Felipe Meneses Lopez and is the perfect place to go after your morning lakeside stroll. Located along the beautiful tree-lined Webster Street and just minutes away from Lake Wendouree, the café serves up a warming brew by passionate baristas who clearly live for their coffee.

The Turret

Also situated in a beautifully restored heritage building, The Turret prides itself on serving up great coffee with equally excellent service. And as if that’s not enough, this café has an awesome array of house made cakes that pair perfectly with your morning or arvo brew.

L’espresso

These guys have been around long before the café craze really hit Ballarat. The original and still one of the best, L’espresso is one of those can’t-go-wrong eateries. Bustling and forever stylish, the coffee and atmosphere will most certainly set the scene for a calming and joyous day.

Fika

Matthew Freeman’s first Ballarat café, Fika is a Scandinavian-inspired coffee house and a firm local fave. A popular pitstop amongst local cyclists, it’s an intimate café with a glorious brew to boot.

Higher Society

Get addicted to the high. That’s their motto and that’s their promise. A visit to Higher Society is certain to have you addicted to the brew, as well as the staff’s level of energy and enthusiasm.

Lola

Named after the infamous temptress of the goldfields Lola Montez, Lola is an elegant café and restaurant housed in the boutique hotel The Provincial. Owned by local personalities and hospitality gurus Simon and Gorgi Coghlan, Lola will have you weak at the knees immediately upon entry. And that’s before you even savour your morning coffee.
