MUNICIPALITIES across the region, including Ballarat, Golden Plains, Moorabool and Hepburn will enter the Fire Danger Period from 1am on Monday, 9 December.

That means that any fires lit in the open will require a written permit from the CFA, or a municipal fire prevention officer in council areas that issue them.

CFA District 15 Operations Manager Chris Bigham said good rains over winter had increased fuel loads across the region, and that what’s green now will eventually dry out and before more of a fire risk.

“People need to be aware that if using fire to clean up around their properties they need to register these on 1800 668 511,” he said.

“So far this year, out-of-control burn-offs and unregistered burn-offs have already caused unnecessary call-outs to for brigades.

Mr Bigham said that one once the Fire Danger Period begins, CFA will have a “zero-tolerance approach” to any fires started from inattention or not following guidelines.

“Expect any fire you start to be fully investigated by CFA and Victoria Police,” he said.
