YOUNG people with an interest in safeguarding Ballarat’s past are being invited to sign up for the City of Ballarat’s Heritage Advisory Committee.

The City currently has two vacancies it wants to fill – a community representative and a youth representative – aged between 18 and 25.

The committee provides advice and recommendations to the council on heritage matters such as the conservation of heritage places and collections, the Ballarat Heritage Plan 2017-2030, and identifying opportunities for external funding to support heritage initiatives.

Ballarat mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the committee is an important link between the council and the community on heritage issues.

“Ballarat’s heritage is one of our greatest assets, and we want to ensure voices from across our community, including young people, are part of the conversation about how we protect and celebrate it,” Cr Hargreaves said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone passionate about history and heritage to contribute to shaping the future of our city.”

The committee meets bi-monthly and includes representatives from the community and local organisations who bring skills and expertise in heritage, history and conservation.

Cr Hargreaves encouraged anyone interested to apply.

“We’re looking for people who can share fresh ideas and perspectives, and who are committed to preserving Ballarat’s unique character for generations to come,” she said.

Applicants must demonstrate an interest or experience in heritage-related areas and be able to attend meetings either in person or online.

The roles are voluntary, and successful applicants will be required to complete a Working with Children Check if applicable and an online OHS volunteer induction.

Expressions of interest should address selection criteria and must be submitted by 5pm on 27 February to [email protected].
