Canary Island Pine, Ballarat Synagogue

A TREE at the top of Barkly Street in Ballarat East has been nominated for the 2020 Tree of the Year award.

Located at the front of the Ballarat Synagogue, the Canary Island pine is up against nine other nominees for the honour.

The pine was planted by Jacob Bernstein in 1857 and has grown to over 20 meters tall.

Other nominees for the in the Tree of the Year competition include a digger pine in the Hamilton Botanic Gardens and the trees of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour.

Run by the National Trust of Victoria, 2020 is the first time all the nominees for Tree of the Year are from the state’s regions.
