A PROUD part of Ballarat’s heritage past has been restored to its former glory after a car crash in June of 2024.

The north balustrade on Hill Street bridge over the Yarrowee River was damaged when a vehicle hit it.

But in a move pleasing many who love their local history, the City of Ballarat recently completed a $40,000 project to restore the historic landmark.

City of Ballarat mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the restoration works reflect the municipality’s commitment to heritage protection.

“Our Community Vision calls for a city that values its heritage and identity. Restoring the Hill Street Bridge is a tangible example of how we’re turning that vision into reality,” Cr Hargreaves said.

The Hill Street bridge is part of Ballarat’s creeks and river channels network, dating from the 1860s to the 1930s, and is recognised as being of potential state significance.

Historic drawings from 1889, stored in the council’s archives, show stone piers and a distinctive wrought iron balustrade. The bridge was rebuilt in 1916, but the decorative looped balustrade was retained.

A City of Ballarat spokesperson said the restoration involved specialist contractors and fabricators working under the guidance of the council’s heritage advisor, enabling 90 per cent of the original balustrade to be retained.

Temporary safety fencing that had been in place since the accident has since been removed, with the bridge now fully open to the community.
