OUTDOOR gym equipment on the shores of Lake Wendouree got an official opening last week, with four stations now available for public use.

The equipment was a surprise sweetener during the Labour Party’s campaign at the 2018 state election, and now 20 months on it’s arrived.

The new equipment features a range of workouts.

The four stations are located at the start of the rowing course near Cardigan Street, Durham Point, Windmill Drive and St Patrick’s Point.

“Particularly during the COVID-19 crisis we’ve seen more and more people getting out and about and walking around the lake,” said Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison. “We know these four new gym stations are going to be so well received.

“We believe that by installing this important gym equipment, that is free and accessible to everyone, people can get in there, have a go and do something different.

“These for gym stations are going to promote a really healthy and active Ballarat community.”

Costing $272,000 for all four sites, the equipment was installed by the City of Ballarat and mayor Cr Ben Taylor thanked the State government through Regional Development Victoria for funding the project.

“This is a really great opportunity for Ballarat as a whole to enjoy exercise equipment around the lake,” he said.

“The State government, and they’ve contributed the funding for this, we’re really just the delivery agent.”

With COVID-19 prevention and personal safety and hygiene at the forefront of many people’s minds, Cr Taylor said the equipment will be cleaned “more than once a day.”

He also urged people to use the new public faculties in a COVID-safe way.

“As we’re coming of restrictions we still need to make sure we’re safe,” he said. “When you do get opportunities, wash your hands, use sanitiser and keep that social distancing.”
