AN upgrade of City Oval’s grandstand is underway to bring facilities into line with modern standards.
The existing two changerooms located underneath the 127-year-old grandstand will be renovated to become female-friendly and some structural works will occur to ensure the building’s longevity.
The upgrade will also include new wall linings, flooring, medical rooms, storage, and toilets and showers which will be located in pods at the rear of the grandstand.
“The idea is to transform the existing changerooms here at the City Oval grandstand and bring them up to current standards with male and female, accessible facilities,” architect Alan Morton from Morton+Co said.
“We’re moving the amenities onto a couple of pods at the rear of the building which then fit in architecturally with the grandstand itself.”
Builder Plan Group is completing the works which are expected to be completed mid-2026.
The City of Ballarat will work with Redan Football Netball Club to find alternative options while the changerooms cannot be used.
Mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the internal upgrades are about making the space more inclusive.
“We know this really historic, heritage building is so important to our community, and we’re really excited to be able to provide some much-needed upgrades,” she said. “These upgrades will go a long way to removing some of the barriers for females who want to participate in sport.”
The grandstand was built in 1908 and includes three square pavilions protruding through the roof with a flagpole on each.
All works will be approved and reviewed by the municipality’s heritage advisor.
A turf renovation will also occur at City Oval starting this month which is expected to be completed in January 2026.
