REGISTRATIONS have opened for Ballarat’s Nature Stewards initiative that is returning for two programs in autumn and spring 2026.
Delivered in partnership between the City of Ballarat and the Victorian National Parks Association, the program is designed to help everyday people explore topics like biodiversity, climate change, land management, and cultural knowledge.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn from passionate environmental experts such as Traditional Owners, City of Ballarat sustainable environment officers, Parks Victoria and Federation University staff, environmental volunteers, and industry representatives.
Since its launch in spring 2022, more than 100 participants have completed the Ballarat program across four years and five courses.
City of Ballarat mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the program is a way to gain knowledge, develop practical skills, and connect with like-minded individuals.
“Nature Stewards empowers everyday people to make a real difference in their local and broader habitats,” she said.

The program is open to anyone aged 18 and over, and is especially suited to those with little or no formal environmental education who are keen to learn more about their local area and explore opportunities to support nature through volunteering.
Registrations are now open for the first program, a 10-week introductory environmental education program for adults, starting in March.
Sessions take place on Saturday mornings from 14 March to 30 May, running from 9am to 1pm, with some field trip sessions extending to 4.30pm.
Program venues include the Federation University Gillies Street campus, as well as the Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary in Happy Valley.
Places are limited to 25 and online applications close on 1 March. More details are available through the City of Ballarat website.
