HOW to save money and eat well to avoid unhealthy weight gain and reduce risks was the message delivered at the LiveLighter campaign launch at Ballarat Health Services recently.

The campaign, fully funded and managed by Cancer Council Victoria, promotes the Eat Smart and Shop Smart resources as a way to help people to reduce their food budget and increase healthier eating.

Research shows that Ballarat has a higher rate of overweight and obese adults than the rest of Victoria.

LiveLighter is aiming to change this by underscoring the importance of making sustainable, healthy changes to diets.

Alice Bastable, Cancer Council Victoria’s Campaign Manager of Healthy Lifestyles said a low income is one of the barriers to eating healthy.

“The Eat Smart and Shop Smart booklets are to designed to assist with nutrition education,” she said.

“The booklets aim to bust the myth that it is too expensive to eat healthy.”

While last week’s launch was primarily aimed at informing health practitioners about using the LiveLighter resources for their patients and clients, Ms Bastable said there is more available for people online such as meal planners, a range of 300 recipes and top tips for a healthy lifestyle.
