Region’s health professionals recognised
A number of Ballarat region specialists have been nominated for the 2026 Victorian Rural Health Awards.
Grampians Health received the bulk of the local nominations.
Dr Mathew Jacob has been recognised in the outstanding contribution category for rural medical specialist.
The category highlights the contribution a non-GP specialist has made to their community.
Dr Jacob has also been nominated for the mentor or supervisor award, which recognises the effort health professionals in these roles play in providing support, knowledge and encouragement to their colleagues.
Jeevan Bhusal has been nominated for the new outstanding contribution to mental health award, which acknowledges those who show a commitment to their communities and have gone beyond expectations of their role.
Bhusal, from the organisation’s mental health and wellbeing services, was also nominated in the rising star category, which highlights those who have shown their passion and dedication to rural health and communities.
Other rising star nominees include Grampians Health’s Dr Gavin Carmichael from the resident medical office, and Grampians Health’s Dr Brienna Allman of the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria’s Junior Medical Office Committee.
Meanwhile, Dr James Maher has been nominated for the Length of Service (35+ years of service) Award.
Dr Maher was recognised for his work with Ochre in Alfredton, Australian Skin Face Body, Creswick Medical Centre and Clunes Medical Centre.
Finalists have been nominated by their peers, teams and communities.
The winners of these awards from Rural Workforce Agency Victoria will be named on Thursday 25 June from 6pm to 7.15pm.
Lauren Cordwell, chief executive officer of Rural Workforce Agency Victoria, said the awards were a vital opportunity to recognise health professionals across rural and regional Victoria.
“Celebrating their contribution not only honours their impact, but also inspires the next generation of health professionals to live, work and care in our rural and regional communities,” she said.
