NEW plans have been formulated to remove a strand of pine trees in Black Hill’s Binny Reserve that have been deemed dangerous.

The removal of the pine trees was recommended by an independent auditor last year, before community feedback on the plan led to further consultation.

Now the pine trees, part of a remnant plantation, will be removed in two stages beginning in the next few weeks, with the rest cut down 12 months later.

City of Ballarat director infrastructure and environment Bridget Wetherall said once the pines behind the Black Hill swimming pool are gone, they’ll be replated with native plantings.

“In addition to the new plantings through the areas where the trees will be removed, there will be further plantings closer to Chisholm Street,” she said.

“Council will certainly welcome the involvement of the stakeholders and wider community with the revegetation works across the reserve.

“We understand that this project has generated strong community interest, however with the planned removal and ongoing reinstatement works across the area, we are looking forward to the reinvigoration of Binney Reserve for the community to continue to enjoy in the years ahead.”
