THIS summer will see the return of Ballarat’s free New Years Eve fireworks, Summer Sundays concert series, and Australia Day Picnic in the Park.
Last year’s fireworks display saw more than 40,000 people head to the shores of Lake Wendouree and a larger crowd is expected this year.
The display is produced by local pyrotechnician Matthew Batty from Northern Fireworks.
It will take place at 9.30pm on Wednesday 31 December from 9.30pm weather permitting.
“Similar to last year, [there will be] a very big 15-minute display fired across three fireworks pontoons down at the Yacht Club and then the really large ariel fireworks set off from near Loreto,” Mr Batty said.
The Summer Sundays concert series will occur each Sunday in January from 3pm until 7pm at the Botanical Gardens, and half of the line-up are local artists.
Food trucks and a fully licenced bar will be available with beverages from Blue Pyrenees Estate Winery, Aunty Jacks, Grainery Lane, and The Gospel Whisky.
“It gives people the opportunity to bring a picnic rug and spread out and enjoy the sunshine and kick back and listen to some good music,” Fe Porter from local band Square Wave Bounce said.
“It’s a good opportunity for local artists to come and play in their community.”
The Australia Day picnic in the park will occur for the fifth time on Monday 26 January with activities, market stalls, food trucks and entertainment.
It will be held in Victoria Park next to the inclusive play space from 11am until 3pm.
The program of events is organised by the City of Ballarat and deputy mayor Cr Ben Taylor said is wonderful to see so many free activities on offer.
“I know we’ve been looking at the cost of living, it’s really important trying to put back into the community,” he said.
“These events are on at really good times of the year where people may not be able to get away, so why not stay in Ballarat and enjoy what we have to offer.”
