World class choir ready to sing

THE oldest secular boys’ choir in Australia is on stage in Ballarat this Saturday.

The Australian Boys Choir will be performing Songs of the Sea at the Anglican Cathedral with pieces from some of Australia’s most well-known composers.

Artist director Nick Dinopoulos has been with the choir for 17 years and in his current role since 2018.

He said this performance will be an opportunity to see world class music.

“These kids are just incredible,” he said. “The work these boys put in goes above and beyond what the average primary school choir can achieve.

“They really do things to a professional standard and have achieved acclaim internationally.

“It’s an opportunity to see really talented kids doing amazing things.”

The concert will feature the boys alongside a vocal accompaniment of adults, singing to the theme of songs of the sea.

“The last couple of years I’ve embarked on putting together a themed season of concerts,” Dinopoulos said.

“Last year’s season was all about journeying and travels, this year is all about singers and songs.

“Most of the program is made up of Australian music which is something we are really proud to champion.”

The group began in 1939 in Melbourne and aims to provide excellence in choral music training.

Since then, choir leaders has educated thousands of performers and has been reviewed by the New York Times

“In essence the program is a great mix of studio training and live performance as you can’t have one without the others,” Dinopoulos said.

“Involvement in the choir is life changing.”
