ROUND two if the Ballarat District Bowls Division saw Ballarat East’s division one side record their second narrow loss in the first two weeks of the season.

City Oval’s Gary Hamilton.

At home the two Blues went down in a thriller on the last end to City Oval 85/87 and with two rink wins a piece this game was even for the entire day.

David Anwyl and James Dean’s rinks proved too strong for both Ian Robinson and Jenny Harman respectively. Peter Dean after leading 12/2 went down narrowly to Chris Smith by three shots.

With East leading by two shots going into the last end, Mark Ryan could not hold out Ben Morris’ rink who scored four and take a 20-shot overall victory and move the Hawks into second place on the division 1 ladder.

In the week prior Ballarat East lost to Central Wendouree in also a closely contested match by eight shots with two rinks up and two down.

Ballarat East President Peter Dean remains confident that the side is on the cusp of winning victory and will again be the host club when it meets third placed Smeaton this coming Saturday.

It is expected that experienced young skipper Luke Whitehead will return to the side which will give the East the edge it needs to get across the line to record their first season’s win.

The other Ballarat East team playing in division 8 travelled to Ballarat Bowls Club where they lost, although President Peter Dean said that East has introduced a new keen bowler in Scott Jordon into the team which he hopes will provide opportunities in the future for the side to enjoy success on the green.

The Club is now proceeding with plans to hold its annual major tournament in memory of Jack Brownlee after having had to reschedule the event from earlier in the bowls season due to the COVID 19 restrictions.

It is expected the new tournament will be played in January and BDBD clubs will be notified shortly of these details.
