AS winter sets in, it's a timely reminder of the important role we all play in supporting local businesses through the cooler months.

While many businesses experience quieter trading conditions during this time of year, winter is also when our community can make a real difference by choosing to shop local, dine local, attend local events and engage local service providers.

The good news is there is plenty happening across the Ballarat region.

One of the highlights on the local business calendar is the upcoming B31 August Business Festival, presented by Commerce Ballarat.

Returning this August, the festival celebrates business, innovation, leadership and community through a diverse program of events designed to inspire, educate and connect people from across all industries.

Whether you're a small business owner, employee, entrepreneur, student or simply someone interested in the future of our region, there is something for everyone.

This year's program features an exciting mix of networking opportunities, business breakfasts, workshops, industry discussions, professional development sessions and special events.

From practical business insights and leadership development to opportunities to meet local makers, innovators and industry leaders, the festival continues to provide a platform for learning, collaboration and growth.

Importantly, it also showcases the depth and diversity of the Ballarat business community and highlights why our region continues to be one of Victoria's leading regional centres.

Adding to the excitement, voting is now open for the two People's Choice categories as part of the 2026 Federation University Commerce Ballarat Business Excellence Awards.

The Community Bank Buninyong Community Spirit People's Choice Award acknowledges businesses that demonstrate a commitment to strengthening their local community beyond their core business purpose, while the Regional Development Australia Grampians Growers and Producers People's Choice Award celebrates the outstanding growers, producers and makers who shape our vibrant culinary scene.

Every vote helps shine a spotlight on businesses that are making a positive impact and contributing to the vibrancy of our region. Visit commerceballarat.com.au to vote before 12 July.

If you're not currently a member of Commerce Ballarat, now is an excellent time to find out more. Membership provides opportunities to connect with other businesses, access professional development, participate in advocacy initiatives and raise your business profile throughout the year.
