Celebrating creativity

March 3, 2023 BY

Andrea Hurley is the owner of eclectic creative retail hub, Hattie and the Wolf.

ANDREA Hurley is a graphic designer, artist and owner of Hattie and the Wolf – a creative retail hub that celebrates the unique beauty of artisanal, local and handmade products and ‘things’ that are just a little bit different!

Hattie and the Wolf is not just a beautiful shop; it’s a destination, an experience.

Andrea has a broad range of artistic interests and creates through diverse media, including digital prints and cards, women’s fashion, painted pots, jewellery and accessories.

In launching Hattie and the Wolf, Andrea’s dream was not just to establish an outlet for her own designs; but to showcase the work of other artists and makers as well.

Alongside Andrea’s art, Hattie and the Wolf also features an eclectic mix of locally made creations, including baby and children’s clothing, toys, homewares, art and fashion – much of this crafted by women in the Ballarat area and across Australia.

Collaboration with other like-minded creators has always been a major focus for Andrea in her growing business, with a ‘community over competition’ approach to developing partnerships and new product lines, such as a skincare range, several bath and body care packages and women’s fashion.

Connecting with other women in the region’s business and creative networks has been an integral part to Andrea’s development of her art and Hattie and the Wolf’s retail.

This has included a fabulous collaboration with Ballarat chocolatier Jade from Lucky & James to create an exclusive chocolate bar that features ingredients sourced locally from Bridget at Saltbush Kitchen.

A partnership with local maker Megan from Scents of Whimsy has seen the creation of a beautiful bath and body range called Milk which is a firm favourite with customers.

Andrea’s most cherished partnership is that with The Wardrobe Green owner Bianca Flint who has been working with Andrea since the opening of the bricks and mortar store six years ago.

Bianca now works in a managerial role and fondly remembers a time when she would bring her youngest daughter to work with her as a three-year-old, with the invaluable support of Andrea.

“Being a woman in business in 2023 is exciting”, Andrea said. “There are so many opportunities to create your own path and do what you love.

“I enjoy being surrounded by creative women and supporting them in their own business journeys.”

It’s very true what they say, when women work together amazing things happen!

A visit to Hattie and the Wolf is a lesson in connection and community and without a doubt, will leave you feeling excited.
