NEWRYBAR Public School will host its Bonfire and Fireworks Night, which has grown to become one of the biggest winter gatherings in the village.
The event will be held on Saturday 1 August, and is expected to attract up to 3,500 people.
What began in the 1980s as a small school community celebration has grown into a major annual fundraiser.
Former P&C members Gerry and Marie Swain recently shared the event’s early history with the organising committee.
The letter recalled local families buying fireworks from the Bangalow News Agency and building a bonfire beside the school, with local fathers lighting the display.
Bec Robinson, who is part of the fundraising committee, said the letter served as a timely reminder of the event’s origins and purpose.

“It has always been about neighbours getting together, year after year, generation after generation, to stand around a fire and look up at the same sky,” she said.
“Today, the event plays a vital role in supporting one of the smallest schools in the region, with all proceeds going directly back into equipment and programs for students, including arts, sports, student wellbeing and environmental initiatives.”
This year’s program includes a central bonfire, DJ Shorty Brown Disco, unlimited rides, glow stalls, a community raffle and food stalls serving sushi, curries, sausage sizzles, baked treats and hot drinks.
Gates open at 4pm, with entry $5 per person or $20 per family. Parking will be available along Broken Head Road and Hinterland Way.
The fireworks will be set off at 7.30pm.
