Geelong Arts Centre celebrates Children’s Week

October 21, 2022 BY

Tweens Night is part design workshop, part dance and all fun.

Geelong Arts Centre will celebrate Children’s Week 2022 with fun immersive theatre experiences that will captivate and excite children from across the region on Friday, October 28.

Running from 22-30 October, Geelong Children’s Week 2022 follows the national theme based on Article 27 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: “All children have the right to a standard of living that supports their wellbeing and healthy development”.

This year, Geelong Arts Centre will deliver on this theme by offering two fantastic opportunities for children and families of the region to get connected, get creative and get dancing with two vibrant events.

The Alphabet of Awesome Science features professors Noel Edge and Lexi Con.

From 5pm to 6pm, children aged 5-12 and their adults are invited on a thrilling voyage through The Alphabet of Awesome Science at Costa Hall with professors Lexi Con and Noel Edge (the Word Nerd and the Science Freak).

Equal parts explosive, messy, spectacular and hilarious, this theatrical race through 26 quirky scientific demonstrations simultaneously educates and entertains young ones, encouraging them to think creatively about the world around them.

Plus, from 6.30-8.30pm, the festivities continue over at Geelong Arts Centre’s Studio 1 and 2 for Tweens Night, a supervised event that will see children aged 9-12 create, make and dance with artistic talent Liz McGrath and local dance master Sherree Nash. Part design workshop, part dance and all fun; this event will inspire creative designs that will come together through a fun dance experience.

“Children’s Week is all about celebrating our young people and how we can best support them through art, creativity and diversity,” Geelong Arts Centre head of programming Penny McCabe said.

Artistic talent Liz McGrath will lend her skills to Tweens Night.

“By giving our young people access to professional arts experiences that ignite a sense of wonder and possibility, we stand by our commitment to nurturing a love for the arts among our community’s youngest members.”
